Serena is the first Virtual UR team member to be highlighted in our new Meet a Developer behind-the-scenes series. Some of her largest accomplishments in the Minecraft world include the interior of Wilson Commons and the entire first-year quad. We asked how she came up with the vision for Wilson Commons and why it’s so important to her.
The Virtual UR development team took on a complicated project this week – creating and implementing a design for functioning elevators in the virtual Minecraft renditions of Wilson Commons and Rush Rhees Library. We believe everyone should have equitable access to resources and opportunities. Building elevators and lifts around campus is just one way we can stand with, and support, the University community members who rely on these resources every day.
One common question our team receives, especially from UR alumni interested in the Virtual UR project, is how our world developers knew which blocks to use – and where to place them – to create realistic buildings reminiscent of those on the physical University campus. The art of building a virtual campus was fostered by months of practice with Minecraft and years of memories at the University of Rochester.
